West Coast import volumes back to normal?
Recently the congestion at the West Coast ports led to a noticeable growth in traffic on the East Coast, but it appears that volumes might be returning to normal. PIERS data show the East Coast's share of US containerized imports peaked in February at 47 percent. That number has since dropped to 42 percent in March, and has remained between 42 percent and 43.9 percent. Similarly, the Gulf Coast's market share peaked at 6.7 percent in January and declined to 5.4 percent in September. When looking at the West Coast's market share of containerized imports on the other hand, data shows that it hit a low of 46.4 percent in February, and then jumped to over 50 percent in March and has remained above 50 percent since then. In September, the West Coast's market share of US container volume hit a 2015 high of 53.4 percent.
