Small modular reactors (SMRs) are getting attention for decarbonizing electricity. This technology can also be used to decarbonize high-temperature thermal energy, which is one of the most difficult sources to abate. This white paper takes a look at different SMR technologies and then examines the pressurized water reactor technology to abate emissions from a refinery and petrochemical complex. A comparison with carbon capture is also examined, and the pros and cons of both pathways to decarbonize are presented.
