Petra Getting Started

Duration – estimated 4 hrs

Overview - Self-guided training provides new Petra users with the basic tools necessary to build a new project, import data, and then view and display data in various modules. Students begin by creating a new project and setting the map projection before importing various well data files, including production data, formation tops, digital logs, and raster logs. With the data loaded, students will learn how to view and organize data in the Main Module by querying wells and viewing data tabs. Finally, students will review basic data display workflows in both the Map Module and Cross Section Module.

Objectives - Hands-on exercises, and covering the following topics: -

  • Organizing, managing, and manipulating project data
  • Performing well searches and queries
  • Working with well and production data, formation tops, digital and raster logs
  • Using gridding, contouring, and other mapping options
  • Constructing cross sections
  • Using graphic element overlay files in maps and cross sections
  • Computing and analyzing data
  • Performing engineering evaluations, among others
Petra Data Loading

Duration – 1 day

Overview - This one-day interactive computer training class is designed to introduce you to the Petra project structure and organization, general data loading options, and basic project and data management functions. In this course, you will use the Main Module and Map Module in Petra.

Objectives - Hands-on exercises, and covering the following topics: -

  • Create a project
  • Set the map projection
  • Load well and production data from IHS files
  • Load data from a spreadsheet
  • Load digital LAS files
  • Load and calibrate raster logs
  • Load cartographic data
  • Perform well searches and queries
  • Organize data using aliasing, reordering, and other options
  • Manage projects using tracking tools
Petra Basic Overview

Duration – 2 day

Overview - Self-guided training is designed to introduce you to the Petra data management and analysis tools. These tools are easily accessed through a series of integrated modules. The Main Module stores all Petra project data and acts as a gateway to the various analysis modules. You will use several of these modules in this course.

Objectives - Hands-on exercises, and covering the following topics: -

  • Organizing, managing, and manipulating project data.
  • Performing well searches and queries.
  • Working with well and production data, formation tops, digital and raster logs.
  • Using gridding, contouring, and other mapping options.
  • Constructing cross sections.
  • Using graphic element overlay files in maps and cross sections.
  • Computing and analyzing data.
  • Performing engineering evaluations, among others.
Petra Advanced Mapping

Duration – 2 days

Overview - Self-guided training is designed for participants who completed the Petra Overview Training Course and want to advance further with mapping features and gridding. A basic or intermediate skill level is required for this course. Map Module is a powerful visualization tool that enables you to apply your knowledge and intuition to guide the development of conceptual models, test and modify these models, and create maps for use in exploration and development, acquisition evaluation, and decisionmaking. This class emphasizes the use of Petra, its database and computational functions, and its gridding and contouring algorithms to facilitate and amplify your creative process.

Objectives - Hands-on exercises, and covering the following topics: -

  • Learn about the organization and functionality of the Map Module
  • Develop a better understanding of map projections, gridding and contouring algorithms, as well as working with various types of spatial data
  • Manipulating map display options and data extents.
  • Importing spatial data with a different reference datum.
  • Manipulating well display options, such as symbol location and data posting, for vertical and directional wells.
  • Managing and organizing overlay layers.
  • Selecting and comparing gridding parameters for different data types.
  • Computing and analyzing data via grid calculations.
  • Viewing maps and grids in 3D, among others.
Petra Advanced Cross Sections and Correlation Techniques

Duration – 2 day

Overview - Self-guided training provides an in-depth focus on the Cross Section Module, as well as practical experience with other Petra correlation modules. These include Slip Log, Log Correlation, Directional Well, and the Raster Calibration and Correlation utilities. Additional topics include creating quality cross section presentations and viewing cross sections in Petra’s 3D Visualization module. Course prerequisites include completion of the Petra Basic Overview class and proficiency in using Petra.

Objectives - Hands-on exercises, and covering the following topics: -

  • Picking formation tops, unassigned tops, fault cuts, and pay intervals
  • Organizing, managing, and digitizing raster log data
  • Using advanced functionality for displaying digital logs
  • Displaying deviated and directional wells in cross sections
  • Adding interpretation to cross sections with overlay graphics
  • Creating quality cross section presentations, among others.
