Since the issuance of the original report on caprolactam, considerably more information has become available on some of the processes evaluated there, and some new process steps have been disclosed, The present study is a supplement to the earlier report and covers six processes or variants on processes. In addition, the hexahydrobenzoic acid process presented in the original report is adjusted for changes in unit values and the addition of final purification section so that it may be compared with the processes studied in more detail here.
The costs of raw materials and utilities vary significantly from one area to the other and from one company to another. Therefore, the relative attractiveness of the processes may change from one situation to another. The effects of changes in the variables are indicated for each process by a sensitivity analysis.
