This study reviews the developments in oxidative dehydrogenation that have taken place since the first Process Economics Program (PEP) report on butadiene was issued in early 1968. Capital and operating costs are estimated for the oxidative dehydrogenation process, as it is believed to be applied by Phillips and Petro-Tex, to obtain a clearer understanding of the future for this technology compared with other methods of butadiene production.
The second topic examined in this report is the advances in butadiene extractive distillation processes that have occurred since 1967 and that are applicable to either by-product butadiene or butadiene derived from butane and butenes. Capital and operating costs are estimated for the five present-day commercial extractive distillation systems using, as far as possible, basic volatility and solubility data as well as uniform design and cost estimating procedures. These estimates are compared with those derived from costs and operating requirements published by the respective process licensers.
